The Function is an immersive satire set at an unspecified corporate event where the audience will be playing the role of invited guests. There will be speeches, special guests, powerpoint presentations, thank yous, waitstaff, sandwiches and a tea and coffee station.
What begins as a generic, mundane night of proceedings slowly moves into the chaotic and surreal. Dance, unexpected guests, social taboos and disarray disturb and the Genevieves and Geralds of what should be a straight forward evening.
Without revealing the purpose of our now active function the audience is allowed to recognize absurdity in what so easily becomes familiar, breathing light on un-interrogated discourse around societal norms and practiced ritual. Allowing questions to emerge as surrealness punctures hyper normalized performance. Leaving one not only questioning our function’s functionality but the duty we perform in social etiquette as a whole. Quickly and self-consciously we all begin to witness our blind acceptance of the bizarre…
The Function; will heighten the atmosphere of such events as these, highlighting their rehearsed, planned, systematic, methodical, repetitive, robotic, over enthusiastic, canapé fuelled nature. No RSVP needed.
